Valentine’s Day- Why do we celebrate it?

February 13, 2015

Saint Valentine’s Day, also known as Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is a holiday observed every year on February 14, by many countries around the world. But do we know why we celebrate Valentine’s Day?

The true origin of this holiday is unclear and most people can’t recall one story that relates to the source. While all of the stories do include a Saint named Valentine that died on February 14, there are variations of his story. One tale says that Saint Valentine was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. During his imprisonment, he healed the blind daughter of his jailer. Before his execution he wrote her a farewell letter and signed it “Your Valentine”. As if to trademark his deeds with the promise of love and brand them with “Your Valentine”.

Flash-forward to today and you have cards, candies, flowers and gifts galore all adorned with the sentiments of “Your Valentine”. $17.3 billion was contributed from Valentine’s Day to the US economy in 2014, according to the National Retail Federation. 61.8 % of Americans celebrate Valentine’s Day and 53% of women polled, said they would end their relationship if they didn’t get something from their Valentine. Schools have Valentine’s Day parties and card exchanges. Your apartment community may host a Valentine’s Day social. Even singles will take to an all gals or guys night out. This day is definitely marked on our yearly calendar of events.

So why has this fairly unknown story led to such a celebrated day? One thought is that, though we may not know the origin or the tales associated with it, we celebrate Valentine’s Day because young or old, coupled or not, everyone needs the promise of love, a kind gesture, or a sweet thought to give us that warm feeling in our heart, to make us feel connected. So this February 14, think outside the box with your valentine. Show thoughtfulness to a neighbor, a friend, a child…anyone you encounter who could use some extra love. And remember… Roses are red, violets are blue and Fairfield Residential would like to wish you- A Happy Valentine’s Day!
