How to Create a Home Office

August 2, 2018

Do you long to work from home? It definitely has its perks! No commute, no need to pack a lunch and plenty of quiet space to get work done. Or maybe you already work from home but feel a little stifled with your current home office situation. Yes, it’s possible to get work done on your couch, but it’s better on your well-being and your back to create a mini office if you have room for one. Plus if you work for yourself you can write it off when it’s tax time!

Steps to Create a Home Office

  1. Make a List of What You Need – Depending on what you do for work, you may literally only need a desk, chair, and your laptop. However, if you need actual office supplies, you’ll also need something for storage as well.
  2. Access Your Space – This will be your number one factor to determine what will work in your home office. Luckily, at some of our Fairfield locations, home desks are built into the apartments. This is ideal, but you can totally have an awesome office even if that’s not the case. Once you measure your space, it’s time to start looking for a desk, chair, and possibly storage.
  3. Look for Office Furniture – Now here comes the fun part…shopping! Actually, shopping for office furniture can be tricky, especially considering you’re going to be using it day in and day out. You might find a desk and chair that you absolutely love only to find the desk is too high for the chair or vice versa. You’ll want to get a set up that is super comfortable for you. This means more measuring. The best way to go about this is to check out desks and chairs at stores first before shopping online. Target is a great place to start. Any office store works as well. Test out different types of chairs to see which ones feel the best. Bring your tape measure so you can take note of the chair to desk ratio if you plan on shopping online later for deals.
  4. Set up Your Office – The day has come that you can finally move from working on the couch to working in your very own office. Yup, it doesn’t get much better than this! Depending on where you bought your office furniture you may either need to put it together yourself or it comes assembled. Hate putting together furniture? See if the company you bought from offers in-home assembly where someone comes out to put it together for you. There will be an extra fee, but well worth it if you’re not handy. If you are on the handy side, you may need some extra tools to assemble so keep that in mind!

There you go! Follow these steps and you’ll be all set up in your new home office. Having a home office to work in is not only rewarding but will keep you much more organized!
