10 Must-See 90s Indie Flicks on Netflix

April 20, 2016

We recently took a poll of our residents across our communities and one common denominator that popped up was the universal LOVE of Netflix. According to our residents, there seems to be absolutely nothing better than lounging on the couch come nighttime and picking their fave Netflix shows/movies to watch.

The truth is, we have to agree.

And we know our residents also love the 90s. The decade known for things like grunge and rap, Friends and ER, the launch of the internet, slap bracelets, soap opera politics, and boy bands among other things…but one of the biggest trends was independently made films; tiny, low budget gems of entertainment.

Netflix, subsequently, has acquired some of the best indie flicks of the 90s. Now, take heed and fill your brain with some real deal indie goodness.

Let’s get to it.

Swingers We’re labeling this a classic and a must watch. You can’t deny Vince Vaughn’s charisma in this film. It’s off the charts. “Vegas, baby! Vegas!”

Like Water For Chocolate Based on the beautifully written novel, this is a beautifully shot movie all about food and love in rural Mexico.

Pulp Fiction Is there an independent film more independently magnificent than Pulp Fiction? Nope.

Ready to Wear (Prêt-à-Porter) Ah, 90s fashion. Go behind the scenes at Paris Fashion Week with the likes of Sofia Loren, Julia Roberts and all those 90s supermodels.

Smoke Signals This was a film festival darling back in ’98, about two young Native American men on a road trip to their past.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape A brooding long-haired Johnny. A young Leo. And 90s it-girl, Juliette Lewis. Enough said.

Beautiful Girls Wait, you haven’t seen Beautiful Girls? Seriously? Natalie Portman? Uma Thurman? Is it obvious that we think you should?

Basquiat Lovely little film set in the 80s art scene of New York about the late famous artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. With Jeffery Wright doing a fabulous job as Basquiat, and David Bowie as Andy Warhol!!

Murial’s Wedding Australians have a quirky sense of humor, and this film is no exception. Be prepared to be wowed by delightfully awkward humor and dance scenes to ABBA. Yes, you read that right.

From Dusk Till Dawn Before the George Clooney Hollywood dynasty was established, he stared in a movie about vampires on the Mexican/American border with Quentin Tarantino and Salma Hayek, directed by Robert Rodriguez. You can’t beat those indie flick credentials.
