Tips for Renting a U-Haul

Moving can be an overwhelming process in itself. Add to that moving to another city or renting a U-Haul to transfer all of your stuff to a new place, you may be dreading your move! Important questions come up such as how big of a U-Haul do you rent, how do you actually drive a big truck like that, and what about insurance? How big of a U-Haul should I get?

U-Haul makes it easy for you to decide which size truck to rent as they break down their truck sizes by how big of a space you’re living in. For instance:

• Pickups – small jobs
• Cargo vans – small jobs
• 10’ truck – studio to 1 bedroom apartment
• 15’ truck – 1 bedroom apartment to 2 bedroom apartment
• 17’ truck – home up to 2 bedrooms
• 20’ truck – 2 bedroom home to 3 bedroom apartment
• 26’ truck – 3 bedroom home to 4 bedroom home

If you’re still unsure on which truck size you should get based more on the amount of stuff you have rather than the size of your living space, go with the larger sized truck. It’s better to have more room than to not be able to fit all of your items in the truck. Depending on where you’re moving, U-Hauls vary in price and can get rather expensive if you’re going far distances, so it’s best to try to get everything you can in one trip.

I’ve never driven a large truck before, will it be difficult?

Technically speaking these trucks are not hard to drive, but that being said, the larger they are the more difficult they will be to maneuver. If in doubt, you can always hire movers to do the job for you. However, if you’re driving the U-Haul yourself, take it for a test drive before actually moving and always be as cautious as you can since this is a large vehicle that you’re not used to driving. Does my car insurance work for U-Haul coverage?

U-Haul states that most car insurances and credit cards do not cover any damage done to the U-Haul or by the U-Haul while you’re driving, so…you’ll want to purchase their Safe Move insurance so that you’re covered. You also may want to purchase their Save Move Plus insurance for the most comprehensive coverage that not only covers their truck, but also covers property damage in case you hit someone else. Be sure to check with your insurance and credit card providers first, though!
