An Apartment State Of Mind
May 10, 2018
When it comes to pets, there might not be another issue that makes a fur parent’s skin crawl like the one we’re about to discuss. Yup, we’re talking about fleas. Those bugs that not only drive your pet crazy but us humans as well. Flea infestations are one of our worst nightmares as pet owners. We can’t stand watching our pet constantly nipping, scratching and just looking plain uncomfortable.
Although fleas are more prominent in the warmer months, for some throughout the country the issue of fleas lasts all year long. But there are solutions and ways to prevent these little buggers from landing on your pet and coming into your home. Let’s take a look at some of the most effective solutions.
How to Protect Your Pet From Fleas
Use a Preventative Flea Medication All Year Long – One of the top ways to rid your pet and home of fleas is to use a topical solution every month. Most of these medications are prescribed and it’s always best to get your veterinarian’s advice before choosing one yourself. The best one for your pet will depend on your pet’s health as some medications are stronger than others and should not be used on pets with compromised immune systems. But if your pet is in good health this is one of the best options for flea prevention.
Keep Your Home Clean – Fleas can lay eggs on your carpet and furniture so you’ll want to clean on a regular basis. That means vacuuming every couple of days and washing bedding if your pet sleeps with you. You may want to keep your pet off of furniture if fleas are an issue. Or buy your pet its own bed so there’s no chance of getting fleas in yours!

Groom Your Pet Regularly – If you’re unable to use a topical flea solution, one of the best bets is to groom your pet regularly. This might not always be easy (depending on your pet), but in the long run, it’s so worth doing. You can either get your pet professionally groomed or do it yourself. Some Fairfield communities offer pet spas or pet grooming facilities so you don’t have to give your pet a bath in your own bathtub!
