How to Keep Your Pet's Teeth Clean at Home

September 7, 2017

With all the things to keep on top of such as flea medication, grooming, healthy food and exercise, the thought of also having to take your pet to get their teeth cleaned every year can be overwhelming. Yet nowadays, most veterinarians advise pet owners to regularly clean their pets’ teeth whether it’s at home or a professional cleaning. And if your pet has quite a bit of plaque build-up, it might be recommended to bring them in for an official cleaning at the office. In most cases, your cat or dog will have to be put under anesthesia for this procedure. And when it’s all said and done, this procedure can costs upwards of $500 depending on where you live.

Us fur parents definitely want to keep our pets as healthy as possible, but many of us don’t have an extravagant budget for annual professional cleanings for our pets. So what’s a pet owner on a budget to do? The good news is that if your pet will allow you, you can brush your pet’s teeth at home.

The best way to ensure this regular process at home is to start them young. You can try products like Triple Pet Oral Care Products which include pet toothbrushes and toothpastes (never use human toothpaste on your pet as it can make them very ill). If you have a puppy or a kitten, get them used to allowing you to brush their teeth by starting them early. This can be a little tricky with older pets, but it’s worth a try.

Other ways to keep your pet’s teeth clean are using TrueBlue Fast and Fresh Dental Swipes or Only Natural Pet All Smiles Oral Care Spray. These methods will help keep your pet’s teeth clean, although they’re not as ideal as good old fashion brushing. In addition, you can also try some food additives that claim to aid dental health such as the cheese-flavored powder “Denta-Treat” by Wysong or ProDen PlaqueOff.

The most important thing is to get your pet used to having their teeth brushed. If you can accomplish this, then simply brush their teeth daily, just like us humans do. However, if your pet is older and will not let you near their teeth, it might be worth it to bring them in for a professional cleaning.
