An Apartment State Of Mind

Houston Highlights

June 25, 2017

You may have heard the expression, “everything is bigger in Texas,” and Houston is no exception. From the Houston Zoo, to Minute Maid Park, to our beautiful apartment communities at Woodway Square and Brisa at Shadowlake, here are our 10 biggest highlights of the Houston area.

  1. The Houston Zoo – Home to over 6,000 species in the park, it’s no surprise that the Houston Zoo made our Top 10 highlights list. Complete with lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!), and the new McNair Asian Elephant Habitat, the Houston Zoo is the perfect place for an afternoon adventure.
  2. Houston Museum District – There’s something for everyone in the Houston Museum District with 4 walkable zones and 19 museums scattered throughout the city’s center. Each beautifully designed with unique architecture to reflect their contents, the Houston Museum District is home to fine arts, history, sciences, and contemporary works. If you’re looking to explore some of Houston’s history, or a few minutes in the AC, stop by the Museum District and enjoy the cultural riches the city has to offer.
  3. NASA Space Center – The official visitor center of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, Space Center Houston is filled with more than 400 space artifacts from lunar rocks to space ships. While you’re there, make sure to check out Independence Plaza, an international and interactive landmark commemorating the NASA space shuttle era with a replica of the Independence shuttle mounted on top of an original NASA 905 shuttle carrier aircraft. If you leave this off of your Texas to-do’s, well, “Houston, we have a problem.”
  4. Minute Maid Park – The NASA Space Center isn’t the only thing out of this world in Houston. Minute Maid Park is home to the beloved MLB team, the Houston Astros. The stadium, which debuted in 2000, has a vintage train station feel inspired by Union Station and the surrounding Houston landscape. With their current success in being first in the American League West, post-season is looking promising for this ball club. If you’re looking for an easy-going day filled with peanuts and Crackerjacks, stop by Minute Maid Park to enjoy America’s pastime.
  5. Lankford Grocery – Visited by Guy Fieri on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, we knew this place had to be good. If you’re craving some no-fuss, classic American cuisine, look no further, Lankford Grocery is your go-to stop for breakfast and burgers in the Houston Midtown. The family-owned restaurant has that “back in the day” nostalgia, but the food takes you straight to Flavortown. Makes sure you go to an ATM before visiting – their cash only policy adds to the retro vibe of this delicious dive.
  6. The Galleria Shopping Center – You can literally shop ‘til you drop in Texas’s largest shopping center. The Galleria houses over 400 stores and restaurants making it a shopaholic’s paradise. The shopping center has a plethora of amenities, including a full-sized ice rink, 2 swimming pools, a kid’s zone, and plenty of parking.
  7. Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park – This 2.77-acre park is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee, read a book, and bring your furry friend to hang out. It features a 64-foot semi-circular fountain as a beautiful focal point amidst the 186 oak trees that are scattered throughout the park. We definitely recommend stopping by this beautiful park if you’re in the Uptown area, even if it’s just to take 5 and relax.
  8. Axelrad Beer Garden – After a long day exploring the city of Houston, why stop there? Axelrad is a bar dedicated to cultivating the cultures of Houston, offering beer, wine, live music, and being within walking distance from a local pizza joint. It’s the perfect place to hang out with your friends (literally) in the city’s only hammock grove while enjoying your drink of choice. Though there is plenty of free parking around the corner, the bar will give you a 5% discount on your bar tab if you use any other method of transportation such as Uber, walking, public transit, or biking. Pro tip: if you forget your bike lock, don’t worry, just ask the bartender for one – on the house.Living room-Woodway square in Houston, TX
