Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is an all-too-common disease that affects over 200,000 women each year. Most of us know someone who has fought breast cancer in their lifetime, whether it be a family relative or friend. According to the U.S. Cancer Statistics Working Group and the United States Cancer Statistics: 1999–2014 Incidence and Mortality Web-based Report, as of 2014:

  • 236,968 women and 2,141 men in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • 41,211 women and 465 men in the United States died from breast cancer.

Also not counting some kinds of skin cancer, according to the CDC, breast cancer in the United States is:

  • The most common cancer in women, no matter your race or ethnicity.
  • The most common cause of death from cancer among Hispanic women.
  • The second-most common cause of death from cancer among white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women.

Because breast cancer affects so many women, the cause to find the cure for breast cancer has taken center stage in the last 20 years. Many of us have heard of local breast cancer walks to support research, or wearing the pink ribbon to support victims and to raise breast cancer awareness.
