An Apartment State Of Mind
February 27, 2020
We all know searching for an apartment can be stressful, but searching out of state can become even more complicated. Whatever your reason is for apartment hunting out of state, the best advice is to do your research and be prepared.
First, what’s your reason for moving out of state? If it’s for work, your new HR department should be able to help you. Contact them to see if they have any moving services or recommendations for apartments.
However, if you can make a trip to where you’re moving to scope out the area, that would be ideal. While not exactly required, seeing an apartment in person is always recommended so that there’s no surprises. Plus, while you can always search online, you may be able to find a gem by driving around looking for rental signs. You may be pleasantly surprised with a great deal.
If travel is out of the question, the next best thing is checking out virtual tours. Fairfield Residential offers this for a number of properties where potential residents can actually have a walk through a model apartment just like if you were to schedule an actual visit. This will give you a much better idea of your potential apartment than just viewing photos.
When making rental connections out of state, it may be in your best interest to contact rental communities rather than independent landlords on say an online search tool like Craigslist. Never send your money to an individual online as it could potentially be a scam. Your best bet is to contact the leasing office of various properties and speak with them on the phone, and if possible have a video conference call where they can actually show you around the apartment virtually.
Depending on where you’re moving you may have to quickly make a decision to apply based on low vacancies. Have all your paperwork ready to go before your apartment search so you can easily jump on your preferred apartment before someone else does.
Lastly, always be aware of anything suspicious. Do thorough research of where you’re moving by looking up reviews or conducting Google searches. The nice thing about apartment searching out of state nowadays is that you can find so much information online.
